Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I built Cloth & Chalk because I kept running into the same problem: the doubt of whether I was ordering too much fabric and wasting money, or not enough and having to go back for more.
The calculator takes your body measurements, you pick the fabric width, and it gives you a yardage estimate broken down by shell, lining, and interfacing. It also shows a visual layout of how the pieces fit across the cloth.
It covers suits, sport coats, trousers, vests, and dress shirts.
An iOS app is also in review on the App Store, so I will be happy to share when it's live.
Would love any feedback from the community, especially on accuracy. Tailoring formulas vary by tradition and I'm always looking to improve.

Does this account for things like pattern matching for stripes or directional prints, or is the yardage purely based on a generic cutting layout?

@sevgiuurelukag Good question! Right now the calculator has a "Pattern" fabric option (stripe or check/plaid) where you can enter your fabric's repeat size, and it adds the appropriate yardage/meterage buffer on top of the base layout (15-25%+ depending on repeat size, capped at 50% for large repeats), so stripe/plaid matching is accounted for. It's not simulating a true piece-by-piece directional layout, more a proven rule-of-thumb buffer tailors actually use. Directional/napped fabrics with no repeat grid (velvet, one-way prints) aren't specifically modeled yet, but it's a great callout, and we'll for sure be adding it to the list!

How does it handle patterns like plaid or stripes where matching matters, and does that affect the yardage estimate or is it purely based on total surface area?

@sarganyunu73371 Two things happen here: the base yardage isn't just total surface area divided by fabric width as it actually simulates packing your garment's real pattern pieces (accounting for seam allowances) into rows across the fabric width, like a simplified cutting layout. On top of that, if you select "stripe" or "check/plaid" as the fabric pattern, it adds a yardage buffer for matching, generally 15% extra for stripes, 25% for checks/plaids by default, or a repeat-size-based calculation (capped at +50%) if you enter your fabric's actual stripe/check repeat. So yes, it does affect the number, it's just not a literal piece-by-piece matched layout simulation, but more the buffer real tailors use when ordering patterned cloth.

Does the cutting layout adjust if I pick a different fabric width, and can I save more than one set of measurements so I can compare yardage across my clients?

@ayhannalkesen Yes! The cutting layout and yardage math both fully recalculate based on the fabric width you pick (54"/58"/60"), and soon (44") for shirts, so it's not just a label change, it actually re-packs the pattern pieces into the layout for that width.
The website is just the calculator, so there's no saving info there. But as mentioned, we're also building an App that goes further, letting you log in and save client profiles, their measurements, and the fabrics used for each order. Still working on the app's features, but I'll post an update here as soon as it goes live!

The cutting layout view is genuinely useful, seeing the pieces laid out to scale made it way easier to trust the yardage number. Wish it had a way to save a few measurement profiles so you don't re-enter everything every time.

The to-scale cutting layout is such a thoughtful touch—seeing exactly how the pieces fit together makes the whole process feel less like guesswork. Nice work making something this technical actually approachable.

@aynurkrbykyt2b Thank you! That was the goal exactly, because the math alone doesn't build trust, but seeing the pieces actually laid out on the cloth does. The dimensions are pretty accurate at this point, and the piece shapes themselves are still something we're refining to get 100% right, but really appreciate you noticing the layout, it means a lot!
