In grad school I ended up watching a ton of YouTube videos as a way for relaxing (it was a very stressful journey for me). After a while I noticed that the videos showing up were stuck to the few niches I have watched, yet once in a while some cool videos would still show up that I never knew existed (e.g. finding cool-looking spots on Google Earth and then somehow hike there...) but definitely would have been interested in if I was exposed to them. This makes me want to help YouTube to recommend better.
The questions we ask on ChatGPT etc not only reflect our interests, but a lot of them can be best answered by a video (or a part of its content), yet AI can not see a video beyond its title and descriptions, and they crave to cite authentic, real experiences (why reddit, youtube are among the top cited websites by AI search).
So there’s a real convergence of three problems:
(1). viewers want more personalized yet diverse video recommendations
(2). creators, especially small ones, want their videos to be at least discovered, and
(3). AI models want more authentic, human-created materials to cite.
This is why I built Citewave, a tool to optimize AI search for YouTube videos, tailored specifically for small to medium creators where channel discovery is a real pain.
Citewave enables a creator to
(1). View which videos are recommended by AI search instead of yours, for both video-specific queries and general ones (for example if I am asking AI to show me an off-the- beaten path spot to visit near Flagstaff, AZ, would a video about exploring based on spotting a cool geologic feature on google earth there get surfaced?)
(2). See what sources AI use when answering questions relevant to the content of a video. I categorize these mainly to 3 types. Authoritative type (e.g. from major news outlet or governments) we cannot control, but personal (blogs, personal websites) and community discussions (reddit etc.) are the ones a creator can optimize for better visibility.
(3). Generate and publish SEO-optimized blogs with a click of a button. In my own testing of the tool, I have found the videos most frequently cited are those whose creators already blog.
I just launched a few days ago, so this is still early.
