Chiptune is a simple app for writing songs that sound like old NES games. Tap notes into a grid using the same four sounds the NES had, then chain the loops into a song. Export a WAV that loops cleanly for your game, video or sampler, or a MIDI file for your music app. Every sound is made live, the way the console made it. No ads, no account, and it's open source on GitHub.

Hi Product Hunt, I'm Chris. I build small apps on my own.
I wanted a simple way to make chiptune music. The programs I found were intimidating and full of choices I didn't need yet, so I made one with the basics up front and a bit of depth for when you want it.
The NES had four sounds: two for melody, one for bass and one for drums. Chiptune gives you the same four. You tap notes into a grid to make short loops, then put the loops in order to make a song. If you want to go further, you can open any sound and change how it's shaped.
When you're happy with it, export a WAV that loops with no gap so it drops into a game or a video, or a MIDI file to finish it in GarageBand or whatever DAW you use.
Every sound is made live the way the console made it, and the code is open source: github.com/ChrisThoma/chiptune
It's $0.99 on iPhone and iPad. I'd love to hear what you make with it.
