Chickadee is a free and open-source browser extension that reads web pages aloud in a natural voice, locally on your machine. Follow along with sentence highlighting, choose from 12 voices, and adjust the reading speed. Speech runs on your computer, keeping your reading private. No account or subscription is needed.
Hey Product Hunt! I'm the maker of Chickadee.
I often want to listen to articles while reading them. But my browser's built-in text-to-speech sounds like a robot from the 1980s, and tools like Speechify cost more than I wanted to pay.
So I built Chickadee. It runs an 82-million-parameter speech model right in your browser, on your own computer. This means you get a natural voice for free, and nothing you read is uploaded.
Chickadee includes:
• 12 voices and adjustable playback speed
• Sentence highlighting right on the original page
• Offline speech after the initial model download
• No account, subscription, or API key
After installing the extension, you can just open an article, press play, and listen. It works in Chrome-based browsers on computers with WebGPU support.
