Why I built CanGrow
CanGrow started in 2019 with notes about my harvests. I wanted to keep track of what I grew, what I harvested, and how each grow turned out.
Then came the next question: What did I feed this plant last time? My notes weren't enough, so I moved into Apple Numbers, building a more structured way to record cultivation.
Eventually, I wanted to answer a bigger question: How much is my harvest actually costing me? After spending money on equipment, rent, electricity, nutrients and everything else that goes into a grow, I wanted to understand whether the results justified the investment. That led me to Google Sheets, where the system kept growing until it had 77 sheets, two forms I could use from my phone, and a lot of behind-the-scenes logic holding everything together.
Then I started managing multiple tents. I was drawing grow-house layouts on paper and in Apple Freeform, but those drawings weren't useful enough for planning real operations. I wanted a proper grow-house designer where I could arrange spaces, place equipment, plan new setups and work out what would happen if I moved or expanded.
By then, I wasn't just keeping records. I was trying to answer questions about the entire growing operation: what worked last time, what changed, what each harvest cost, where equipment belonged, what needed attention and how to make better decisions next time.
So I started building CanGrow, originally by porting my spreadsheets and the logic behind them into an application. I didn't expect it to become what it is today. I kept finding more questions worth answering, and kept building the tools to answer them.
Today, CanGrow has grown into a farm management platform with crop tracking, environmental monitoring, equipment and inventory management, post-harvest workflows, labour tracking, harvest economics and grow-house planning. It also has a separate, free library for researching strains and comparing growing equipment and prices across markets.
The platform now has two installable web apps: one for managing the growing operation and another for the public library.
What started as personal notes about harvests became a spreadsheet system, then a much larger software platform. The original questions are still at its heart, but CanGrow now answers far more than I ever planned.
I built CanGrow to answer the questions I kept asking myself while growing — and to bring the records, tools and decisions of an entire indoor growing operation into one place.
