Hi, I'm Sohail, and I built Camora.
My laptop's webcam was grainy and my phone's camera was sitting next to it doing nothing. The apps that fix this either lock HD behind a subscription, add a watermark, or want an account. So I built one that doesn't.
What it does: install Camora on your phone and on your computer, connect them with a USB cable or pair once over Wi-Fi, and a camera called “Camora” appears in every video app.
A few things I cared about:
Delay: over USB it's about 150 ms from camera to screen on Windows. I measured it by filming a clock.
Privacy: no account and no cloud. The video goes straight to your computer, the Wi-Fi link is encrypted, and the apps send nothing to me.
Quality: up to 4K where the phone supports it, and 60 fps up to 1440p. Video calls get 1080p automatically.
Not there yet: iPhone, macOS, Windows 10, and the phone's microphone. Tell me which one you'd want first.
Questions, bugs, ideas: I'll be here all day.
