Click the tray. Pick 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1, 2, or 5 hours, or indefinite. caffinated holds a native IOKit power assertion until the timer expires, then releases it. Optional display-sleep toggle. Resumes after reboot. macOS 11 or later. Free.
Hey everyone, I built caffinated because the correct way to prevent macOS from sleeping is already in the operating system. It is called a power assertion, it is exposed through IOKit.
No sudo, no kernel extension, no background daemon. The tray icon fills in when active and empties when idle.
- IOKit system sleep prevention with a one-click tray toggle.
- Five timer presets (15 min, 30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours, 5 hours), backed by a per-second countdown that releases all assertions automatically on expiry. Indefinite mode for jobs without a deadline.
- Independent display sleep toggle (PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep), switchable mid-session, with a live assertion swap.
- Launch at Login via a LaunchAgent plist in your own ~/Library/LaunchAgents/. No admin rights.
macOS 11.0 or later. Apple Silicon and Intel. Free. Honest feedback welcome, particularly on the reboot restoration path and the live display-sleep assertion swap.
