"Herd mentality, or mob mentality, describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items."
Thanks @bentossell! That's definitely the idea behind Blind Hunt. Several studies have been conducted on herd mentality and by 'hiding' the upvote counters and shuffling the posts, you spend more time on Product Hunt reading about the products instead of blindly upvoting.
Is it perfect? Definitely not. There is definitely a lot of room for improvement, so any feedback would be awesome!
EDIT: Couple things on how it works:
- Hides upvote counters for past 3 days
- Hides upvote counter on individual post page & hides upvoters section
- If you really need to get your fix and see what's trending, the homepage still has all upvote counters visible.

@mattpickle_ great idea and a way to help the user form their own opinion. This can really help PH. The new PH app makes it harder to view more products and have a birds eye view. It puts the emphasis on popular products. This is an innovators and early adopters community where originality (both as a maker and as a user) should be rewarded. The current design makes this difficult cc @bentossell@rrhoover
@mossibat Thanks! The extension automatically expands the first 3 days in the PH Feed just for that reason. If you get featured later in the day, this give you a chance to show up at the top of the list for a couple days.
That's a very interesting idea. Would be curious to see how the result be different from the current way of displaying products. Can you explain more about your shuffle algorithm design?
@elaineluyi Hey Elaine, it's super simple and just picks a random number (Math.random) based on the # of products for that day.

here's a thought: how about PH hides the counter unless you upvote and then confirm upvote once count is displayed (versus endless upvoting just to view) - couple this with endless randomized resorting whenever app is opened or refreshed, may create a more level playing field...
wow - if you collect data it'd be really cool to see how products are ranked when picked blind vs normal

Excellent! Thanks for building this, I've been bugging the PH team for some kind of randomizer feature to explore the many cool apps which never make it to the front page and removing the number of upvotes is another great idea, will definitely remove the herd-mentality factor.
