Better Search Lab is a free, self-hosted alternative to Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking. Rank tracking, keyword and competitor research, site audits, backlinks, a weekly ranked list of what to do next, and AI-visibility scans of Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini. AGPL-3.0, no seats or credits: you pay only DataForSEO's pay-as-you-go data, about $0.37 to map a 150-keyword site. One command to install.
Hi Product Hunt. I'm Hesham, and I built Better Search Lab because I got tired of paying $100 to $500 a month to rent SEO tools that sit on top of the same data providers I could pay directly. Better Search Lab is a self-hosted SEO tool you run with one command (Docker and curl are the only requirements). Rank tracking with history, keyword and competitor research, a free on-page audit, backlinks, Search Console and Analytics side by side, and a weekly opportunity list: striking-distance keywords, decaying pages, momentum, competitor gaps, SERP features, cannibalization and CTR gaps, scored and explained from your real Search Console data.
Every week it scans Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini for the queries you care about and tells you whether you're named, cited, or neither, and who is getting the citation when you aren't.
The software is free under AGPL-3.0. Search data comes from DataForSEO on pay-as-you-go pricing: a rank check is $0.002 per keyword, research and competitor calls about $0.012 each, a backlinks refresh about $0.06. Mapping a 150-keyword site the first time is about $0.37; a weekly refresh about $0.34. The app shows every cent on a Usage page, and it never renders a number it doesn't have. If a data source isn't connected it says so instead of guessing.
