I built Before Leaving because forgetting things has always been a real problem in my life from small, everyday stuff to bigger, more stressful misses. I kept trying reminder and to-do apps, but most of them felt flat: they helped you write things down, but they didn’t make the experience feel personal, helpful, or enjoyable. I wanted to build something that focused on the moment right before you leave—when forgetting actually happens. That led me to a more context-aware approach: reminders tied to places, trips, routines, and even shared plans, with features that help you remember what matters in a more visual and flexible way. As the product evolved, I also realized this problem shows up across a lot of different parts of life, not just one. Work, travel, pets, plants, bills, family plans, daily routines—they all have their own version of “don’t forget this before you go.” So I expanded the app to support different domains while keeping the core idea the same: reduce stress, make preparation easier, and help people leave with more confidence. A big part of the process was making reminders feel less like chores. I wanted the app to feel more rewarding, more personal, and a bit more fun to use, so I leaned into things like smart suggestions, customizable flows, visual memory aids, and gamification. This launch is the result of a lot of iteration around one simple idea: forgetting is a universal problem, but the tools for it usually feel generic. I wanted to build something more thoughtful, more motivating, and more human.
