Hey Product Hunt! 👋 What if we there was a social networking site that understood you and provided you with relevant content all the time? Not after scrolling for an hour, but every single post is just for you. Lately, like most of my fellow social media users, I have found myself endlessly scrolling trying to find content that is relevant and interesting to me. Algorithms can sometimes be surprisingly good (like slot machines), but most of time they are not. The algorithms have one goal, to engage you, which they usually do by enraging you. Seeing that 80% of the social media content is created by only 10% of users, it dawned on me that perhaps what we need is better ways to give and receive personalized recommendations of content to each other. A tool for the remaining 90% of us who hesitate to share content and present our true selves in order not be judged, because who knows to whom the algorithms might show our content to. Being social should be personal, meaningful, and relevant to our lives. That’s why I came up with Beaconed, a platform that allows you to share content exclusively with two people whom you know would find your content relevant. They can then pass it on two others and it goes on from there. Think word-of-mouth but for online content. This ensures that you only ever receive content that you find relevant. Thereby removing all the noise from your feed. After all, we know our friends and family better than any algorithm ever could. I know what you must be thinking, “Teddy, can’t I just do this by messaging someone”. Yes, you could, and that is what most of us do. Whenever we find content that we know someone would love, we send each person a separate message, usually two people. We don’t want to create a separate group for each content, so we end up going back and forth between messages talking about the same content. It would have been easier and reduced a lot of clutter in our messaging app if we did it around the same content. Besides those two people we sent the message to, have something in common and it may be a great way to connect them. In short, messaging is about people, beaconed is about content and the people it’s relevant to.
