Interesting idea however you pc must run all the time. Also your uplink must be decent .

Your very own private cloud. However the 'always-on' requirement for the 'PC' is the reason I prefer a hosted cloud solution outside of my network.

I use owncloud as a solution for my cloud storage. I have a linux server running all the time at home. It hosts phabricator for my private repository and own project development use and owncloud for my personal file storage. It works pretty well. The only problem is I don't have static public IP address.

Similar to https://www.getsync.com/ but without the catchy title "Skip the cloud" I see it as a way to avoid the monthly payment of a cloud storage provider. And yes, you'd need decent up-speed for large files :) Most of us have an old computer that we don't use (an ASUS EEE PC myself) - just add this app and you have your own cloud.
