I'm Jason, and I built Barely Legible because of a medical bill that sat on my counter for three weeks — I genuinely didn't know what I was looking at.

I kept telling myself I'd call the hospital to ask about the charges. I never did. I just paid it.

Turns out that's pretty much everyone's experience with bills — and it's a real problem, because billing errors (especially on medical bills) are far more common than most people realize. Studies suggest most hospital bills have at least one error. But the documents are dense, the codes are cryptic, and calling to dispute something is its own full-time job.

So I built the app I wish I'd had.

How it works: You take a photo of your bill. Barely Legible runs OCR to pull the text, then uses an LLM to explain every line item in plain English — what the charge is, what it's for, and whether the math checks out. The whole thing takes about 10–15 seconds.

A few things I'm proud of:

- Bill images are never stored on any server — they're sent for analysis and immediately discarded
- It works on medical bills, utility bills, insurance EOBs, and most anything else with line items
- The math-check feature adds up the line items and flags it when the total doesn't match

This is a solo project — I built it over the past few months, and today is the first real public launch. I'd love to hear what you think, and I'm here all day to answer questions.
