Alternative investments don't fit traditional portfolio software. AltTrack was built for them - tracking performance, income, capital calls, tax documents, and more across your private market portfolio: private equity, real estate, venture, and private credit. Also includes two free calculators (no signup): XIRR, and fees & carried interest. Free to start, no credit card required.
Hi,
I started tracking my own alternative investments in a spreadsheet, the way most people do. It worked fine for the first three or four positions. Then I added a private credit fund that paid monthly, a real estate deal that called capital in multiple tranches, and a PE fund that hadn't distributed anything in three years — and the spreadsheet stopped working. I also tried online portfolio trackers that allowed alternative investments to be entered. The problem was that the alternative investment metrics and tracking on these sites were built as add-ons to public market tracking and insufficient for my needs and desires.
That's really the whole origin story. Not a big insight, just a years-long idea that I needed something more to fully track my alternative investments the way I wanted to track them - from initial investment to my exit, tracking industry metrics and performance trends, income received and forecasted, past and future capital calls, receipt of tax documents each year, and more. Every tool I tried was either built for public markets or built for institutions and priced like it.
The process changed a lot once we started building. Our first instinct was to make something that looked like a brokerage dashboard — clean, simple, one number per investment. That didn't work, because the whole point of this asset class is that the numbers aren't simple or straight forward. A real estate syndication's "return" means something completely different depending on whether you're looking at cash-on-cash yield this quarter or XIRR since inception. So we ended up building toward more detail, not less — DPI and TVPI next to each other, NAV history over time instead of just a current number, capital calls tracked against what's still unfunded rather than just what's been funded so far, income tracking and forecasting (with automatic frequency detection).
I use the site for personal alt investment tracking, and am quick to add features and respond to comments and suggestions. One of my favorite features is the income and capital call alerts - being able to see at a glance upcoming income and capital call requirements has given me a level of comfort and understanding that I realize I never had before.
Happy to answer anything - and curious what has been the most annoying part of tracking your own alt investments.
