Thanks to @jmitch for hunting us! Hi all! I'm Calvin. My cofounder Jess and I started working on Afterword as our quarantine project, and we're super excited to launch our alpha on Product Hunt today! We're both avid readers and former Goodreads users who were disappointed by the experience, and wanted to create something better. Afterword is starting off as a dead simple personal library that helps readers track, share, and discuss their books. The eventual goal is to help authors support their writing careers, while also building products to help readers engage with authors. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of what we're building, and we have exciting projects on our roadmap. Currently, our key features are: - Book tracking - write notes, edit lists, and move books to one category to another as you read through them - Activity - see what your friends are doing on Afterword, and find new books to read and people to follow - Reviews & Discussion - discuss your favorite books on Afterword when you're done reading, or leave reviews - Recommendations - send the books you enjoyed most to your friends with one click For the Product Hunt community, we're opening up signups for the next 48 hours. We've been operating the past few months under a closed program, and we'd love to welcome new users and continue making our little project better. Have questions or feedback? Hop in our Discord (https://discord.gg/chRqknHwca), leave a comment here, or click the Feedback button on the bottom right of our website. Happy reading, and we're so excited to welcome you all!

So exciting to see this come to life! I've wanted a better place and way for me to share what books I'm reading and interested in with my friends for the longest time 🔥🔥 Also, importing my books from Goodreads worked like a charm. Congrats on the launch @jessmei_ @calvin_dong !!

@calvin_dong @kunalsh23 thanks kunal!! means the world to us. feel free to give us feedback anytime

Can you comment more about how the experience is improved over Good Reads?
Calvin Dong
@lsherman my two main issues with goodreads were these: 1. confusing UI. you could write notes for your books, but you had to click through layers of multiple buttons to get there (I didn't even know this feature existed until a friend told me). going to a book details page was messy, disorganized, and filled with things that I don't want to see (Reader Q&A, lists with this book, etc). that's a theme with goodreads - nothing you expect to be able to do is easily accessible, and the website throws arbitrary buttons, links, and action items at you. a good example is the profile dropdown on the top right - it shows me _13_ items, of which i've only ever clicked on two. i could make a whole laundry list of simple actions i would expect to be very easy to do that goodreads overcomplicates or hides away. 2. lack of engagement - following my friends isn't even helpful on goodreads much of the time, because in my experience, lots of people check out of using it and never touch it again. To resolve these, we made moving around books super simple, we made creating lists super simple, and we made seeing your friends activity, writing notes, and making recommendations super simple. that's a theme of what we're building - distilling down only what really matters for readers.
