What do you think? …

Lee Martin

A little over five years ago, I launched Turn, a web app which helps artists turn audio into videos they can share on social platforms. This is done by taking a provided image and audio file and generating a short video in which the image is cut into a circle and spins slowly while the music plays. My thinking at the time is that a rotating circle evokes the feeling of music playback, even when it is muted. When I originally launched Turn, the primary channel for social promotion was the Instagram feed so the app produced short, square videos. Well, a lot has changed since then, with duration limits being increased and vertical content becoming a key way we share music online. The time had come to pause freelance work for a moment and build the next iteration of Turn.

I’m happy to announce that work is now complete and the new version of Turn is live at www.turn.audio. The app has been completely rewritten from the ground up. In addition to many quality of life improvements around authentication, billing, speed, and accessibility, I have unlocked the two most requested features: longer durations and different export types. Pro users may now create videos up to 5 minutes in length and choose between square, landscape, and portrait export types so Turn videos may now be shared on stories, reels, timelines, and beyond. I have also started work on the next round of features. Disc speed anyone?

On the surface, Turn may seem like a novelty app but when you couple it with something as important as merch, it really proves its worth. If you have a mockup of a vinyl or CD you’re selling, I invite you to upload that image and an audio clip from the release to generate one of these videos. I think you’ll find that Turn’s nod to the physicality of music listening pairs nicely with the marketing of physical products.

To celebrate Turn's launch on Product Hunt, we're offering one month of Pro free if you use the code PRODUCTHUNT at checkout. If you're a sound creator, I hope you enjoy the simplicity of Turn and it proves useful in sharing your work.

@masump hey Masum, at the moment Turn will allow you to select .mp3, .wav, and .m4a files. These are later encoded to .aac as they are going to be part of a .mp4 video file. We try to retain quality but let us know if anything sounds off.

Lee Martin

@hamza_afzal_butt Cheers! I'm on a quest to keep Turn simple but have ideas for other apps that would enhance visuals a bit more. 🙏🏻

Tania Bell

this looks pretty cool. bookmarked and upvoted.

good luck with the launch

Lee Martin

@taniabell Thank you Tania. 🙏🏻

Tania Bell

@leemartin a question for you - this sounds like it's mean for music. has anyone done spoken word?

Lee Martin

@taniabell most of our users are DJs or artists but we've definitely seen some other use cases like podcasts. 👍🏻

Tania Bell

@leemartin any examples you can share? I'm spoken is my jam.

Lee Martin

@taniabell I don't have any spoken content handy but if you visit the hashtag #turnaudio on Instagram, you can see many examples of the app in use: https://www.instagram.com/explore/search/keyword/?q=%23turnaudio

Mohamed Zakarya

What an exciting launch! Wishing you growth, success, and a lot of happy users.

Lee Martin

@mohamed_zakarya thank you. 🙏🏻

This is such a smart and fun way to bring music visuals to life! The spinning disc effect really captures the feel of music playback in a way that just works. With longer durations and different export options, how do you see artists and creators using Turn in new ways beyond social media?

Lee Martin

@jonurbonas cheers Jonas. You can't beat a spinning disc. 💿 The longer duration and landscape export has allowed artists to use the app for long-form content also. It's a very simple way to make a music video for a full track.

Turning art into spinning music videos sounds so creative! How does Turn work—does it use AI to sync visuals with audio automatically? Would love to see examples of what users have created!

Lee Martin

@alexander_winter no AI necessary, we just spin subtly. 👍🏻 We create a new video everyday for inspiration on the Turn social accounts: https://www.instagram.com/turnaudio

Pieter Beulque

Beautifully designed!

One question—would you consider a one-time fee? Would be happy to pay once to generate a few videos for my band's upcoming release but don't like paying monthly (and canceling immediately feels so cumbersome).

Lee Martin

@pieterbeulque Hey Pieter! This is something that comes up a lot but I really don't like how Stripe (our payment provider) handles one-off payments. At the moment, the subscribe/cancel strategy is your best bet (or contacting me for a free coupon 😅.) I'm also toying around with a concierge service which allows one of our designers to help turn your album assets into videos but it is sorta positioned as a VIP offering for the major labels: https://book.stripe.com/6oE8zSb1BgAF0c89AA

Austen Collins

Looks awesome as usual @leemartin
