DeRay Mckesson was raised in Baltimore by parents who struggled with addiction. Now thirty, he’s a prominent member of the Black Lives Matter movement—and, as of this month, he’s running for mayor of Baltimore. He talks to The New Yorker’s David Remnick about the transformations in his own life, and how he’s taking protest to the political stage.
