Roadie is a menu bar app that keeps your Mac on the microphone and speakers you chose. Rank your inputs and outputs once. After every reconnect, wake or login, Roadie selects the highest-ranked connected device, tells you when it corrected macOS, and offers one-click Undo. Headphones take over when they connect. Roadie never captures audio and needs no microphone permission. Notarized by Apple, macOS 13 or later. Free for 7 days, then $9.99 once for up to 3 Macs.

I built Roadie after getting tired of macOS jumping to display speakers or the wrong microphone whenever a device reconnected. The idea is deliberately simple: set priority lists once, then let the menu-bar app handle the churn without fighting intentional manual choices. Roadie is local-first, captures no audio, and needs no microphone permission.
Update, 30 October 2026: Roadie launched here as 0.9.2 Early Access, and 1.0 is now out. It's signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without the first-launch warning, and it installs from a disk image. The menu now lists every connected input and output, like the Sound menu in macOS, and Settings keeps one numbered list for input and one for output. Feedback on device compatibility and switching behavior is still very welcome.
