RISE is the only app built around the two most powerful levers for improving your energy, focus, and performance: sleep debt and circadian rhythm. RISE shows you when you're primed for deep work, when to take it slower, and how to shift your sleep and schedule to feel and function better—day after day. It’s not just about optimizing your night or your day—we help you do both, so you can feel less exhausted, be more productive, and have more energy for what matters.

What do you think? …

Hrishikesh Pardeshi
An app I have been using for a couple of months now. Has helped me understand quite a bit about Sleep science and my own schedule. Not sure how much it has helped on an objective but I surely feel much better focused and fresh in the mornings now.
Jeff Kahn
@hrishikesh1990 thanks a ton for sharing what we're working on. Glad you're feeling much more focus and fresh in the mornings. How much sleep debt did you work down?
Hrishikesh Pardeshi
@jfkahn Most welcome Jeff! Love the app. I have been been able to reduce > 0.5 hrs of debt in the recent times, but it has been much higher from the beginning for sure :)

Thanks @hrishikesh1990 for hunting ❤️ We weren't expecting a hunt on valentines morning. We also decided to take down our paywall just for the day (meaning a free lifetime subscription) so instead of reading the rest of this post just go try it yourself. Since there are so many sleep apps and companies out there, thought I'd share with the community a bit more about the mission we're on at Rise. In short, we're working on making healthy sleep standard. If we had our druthers, everyone would be committed to the life-long practice of being rested. As a team, we're living in that future world of being well rested. People are nicer, healthier, more productive and all the other amazing things that come from better sleep. Imagine if the world was that way? It's that vision that drives all of us @risescience to do what we do. Our obsession with sleep started 10 years ago when @leonsass and I met in engineering school. We'd be up late at night pounding the books. We were exhausted. We started to think our sleep might have something to do with it. This was novel back in 2010😂 We got a chance to hone our sleep science knowledge with some of the top sleep scientists in the world. That good fortune led us to, in my knowledge at least, publish the first paper on sleep behavior change. The initial strong results gave us confidence that we could build technology to help regular people get more sleep amidst the ups and downs of life. So, thanks for giving us a chance to insert a piece of technology into your life that we've designed with intention. Thanks to the thousands of sleep scientists that came before us to pave the way. We owe our work to you and we stand on the shoulders of giants. Go ahead, and give it a try. If you like Rise and want more folks to find it, leave us a written review in the App Store or PlayStore. Seriously, those reviews help a ton. Lastly, let us know what you think. Feel free to ask away, we'll be perusing this until end of day. And then of course, we'll stop working because it's valentines day and we should be getting sleep💤💤

@hrishikesh1990 @risescience @leonsass @jfkahn I downloaded the app, but how do I know that I've got the free subscription? There is not any way I can see to subscribe in the app.
Nick Seguin
@lifesmyth If you didn't go through a paywall/subscription process then you should be all set!
James B
@nickseguin @jfkahn Is it possible to buy a lifetime license?
Sean Crowe
Congrats on the launch @nickseguin !! I'll check it out tonight :)
Nick Seguin
@seancrowe5 Thanks @seancrowe5 Let us know how it works out for you
Seb Jachec
Interested to try this, but looks like it's not available in the UK – perhaps US only?
Nick Seguin
@iamsebj Thanks for the email convo. Excited to get you on the Rise :-)
Nathan Gouy
@iamsebj @nickseguin Same here (in CA), not available for android ?
Nick Seguin
@nathan_gouy feel free to shoot us a note support at risescience.com
Nathan Gouy
@nickseguin thank you for your reply Though I am not sure where to do so on your (well designed) website. No intercom like pop up is showing, and there is no "contact us" section. + in the FAQ it indicates : ``` Does Rise work on Android? Rise is currently available on iOS. Android is on our product roadmap. ``` I though it was available since there is a CTA to android app here, on product hunt
Nick Seguin
@nathan_gouy sorry about that. I was unclear. Go ahead and email: support @ risescience.com. I'll help you re: international there. Also, our fault for not updating our FAQs after Android launched.

Perfect product market fit
Jeff Kahn
@jaketital Thanks for the love!

Sleep is clearly a problem, hence sleep products seem to be relatively common with many claiming to be backed by 'science', but few actually are and they end up either as dead products within a month, or milking customers' money with pseudoscience. But this could be different. Your FAQ says: > In fact, Rise's two co-founders were the first to publish a paper that showed sleep apps can help people get more sleep and feel better. Which sounds promising. Can you talk a bit more about this paper, the background of the founders and the specific science behind your product?
Jeff Kahn
@mandeep Thanks for bringing up an important topic. It's tiring as a consumer and I'm consistently underwhelmed by the science in every sleep product I've seen to date. At some point I owe you a blog post critiquing the science behind every major sleep product Everyone claims "science" these days. Check out https://www.risescience.com/science where we talk about what that means to us. TLDR: We only build what we could reasonably defend to a group a sleep scientists or behavior scientists (if the feature is more in that realm). So when we say science, that is what we mean. Now, that doesn't always mean we're right. Any scientific discipline evolves over time. It does mean that you will get something that works and is based on the amazing work of sleep scientists the last 95 years (yes, it's not quite 100 yet). Building products with a deep connection to academic literature is incredibly difficult. We spend a significant amount of time training everyone on the team so they can build with intent, we engage with the research world to critique our work and make us better, we invest in putting our work in front of many rounds of user research before "shipping". At the end of the day, we're building a product to help folks make change in their lives. The scientific enterprise is concerned primarily with the discovery of new knowledge. Everything we do (focusing on sleep debt, circadian rhythm, habits) and what we don't do (sleep architecture, sleep scores, meditation) is intentional. I mentioned a bit about my background in sleep science with @leonsasson. I'm not a traditional sleep scientist (I don't hold a PhD in a related field) but I've published papers in the field. That said, in my work at Rise I've had the ability to get coached by the some of the best scientists in the field and have been running "experiments" testing and building sleep products for almost a decade. I didn't quite answer your question but hope this gives you more color. Feel free to ask my anything further. More than happy to share.
Mandeep
@leonsasson @jfkahn That does answer my question - thanks! I don't expect some kind of perfect implementation, or something that aims to be a pure implementation of academic literature. Of course, any product needs to take into account the customer as well. I'm just after products that aren't selling snake oil, and have some kind of scientific reasoning behind the product, and a reason to believe their product is actually going to fix sleep problems. In this specific field I don't think a product can do that without both some understanding of relevant sleep science, and the tech that can accurately do what the app is trying to do (eg an Apple Watch cannot accurately detect advanced sleep metrics, like many apps are trying to do). For example, it's clear through multiple studies that (at least currently) sleep tracking apps on phones cannot even remotely accurately track 'REM sleep'. Heck, some apps are unable to even accurately detect if you're sleeping at all. [wrote a small post about it here, trying to be optimistic: https://news.ycombinator.com/ite...] Personally I'm looking for an app that can help me improve some aspect of sleep, or the effects of poor sleep, in a way that's reliable and useful. I don't think the apps I refer to in my previous paragraph are - they understand there's a problem with sleep, and that apps may be able to help, but they generally don't really have the tech or the science to back whatever solution they're selling. I've tried many of them personally and none have helped. My sleep has naturally improved, but I used to have quite a lot of sleep problems, so I think there's definitely room for an actually useful product to fix a problem that affects millions. After all, poor sleep is a big cause of poor educational and workplace performance, and general happiness. I'd love to give Rise a shot if you ever come to the UK - I can't see it on my App Store currently.
Jeff Kahn
@leonsasson @mandeep thanks for the thoughtful response. email us at support@risescience.com and we can give you instructions to download from the UK. It annoys us that many apps report sleep architecture when: 1) best in class wearables aren't much better than a coin flip 2) even if it were accurate that presumes knowing the information is useful. Spoiler: it's not terribly useful for most folks looking to get more of their day through better sleep.
Brian Link
Excellent, been looking for a better sleep app. Congrats @nickseguin! Downloaded and using.
Nick Seguin
@blinkdaddy Love it. We help you be more productive and wake up feeling refreshed by improving your sleep. Looking forward to your feedback.
