If you’ve used Retool before, you know it’s a powerful way to build internal tools fast—drag-and-drop UI, built-in queries, full control with code when you want it. Today, we’re making that flow even faster—with AI built directly into the editor.
You can now build apps with natural language in Retool. Just describe what you want—“Create a dashboard from my order data in my Postgres database showing unshipped orders over $5k, with filters and alert rules”—and Retool will generate a fully functional app, wired up to your data, abiding by your security requirements, with components, queries, and logic in place.
There are a lot of AI dev tools out there, so here's a quick rundown of what we think makes AI AppGen different in Retool:
On your actual data. PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Salesforce, Databricks, and 100+ other integrations, no glue code needed.
In your cloud: Deploy where and how you prefer, securely connected to your systems.
Secure by default. Every app inherits your SSO, RBAC structure, and comes with audit logs wired and ready to go.

@tonyabracadabra Hi Tony, thanks for the question! I'll take each of the two parts, one at a time.

There are a couple different ways you can handle this, depending on your use case. If you have just a couple queries you need to chain together, our Assist functionality will be able to write those queries for you and (after you review and approve them) chain them together in your app. If you need more complex backend logic or need to trigger a workflow that's much more long-running, you can connect your app with a Retool Workflow, to give you even more flexibility.
Either way, we make sure to show you every query that's being written, so you can make sure it's aligned with what you've asked for and so you can have confidence in your deployed application.

The governance features of the Retool platform have been tested by companies of all sizes and organizations with all sorts of compliance and security requirements. They've shown that once you configure your environment and your resources with the appropriate controls, there's no limit to what you can build, even in the strictest environments.

How customizable is the generated app? Can I tweak UI, queries, or logic easily?

@abod_rehman In the end, the generated app is a Retool app! So all of the customizations and tweaks you can make to Retool apps apply here as well. Once you're done prompting, you can use our drag-and-drop canvas, manually configure components with the Inspector, apply your own themes and branding, or even dive into the code to edit the underlying queries in your app.
We've been building Retool for years to make all of those adjustments easy and none of that is going away.

@keanan_koppenhaver Promising direction. At a high level, I’m looking for three things: speed (from prompt to usable app), control (clear review/override), and safety (security/governance preserved). How does AppGen keep that balance as apps evolve beyond the first prompt?

@monzures It really comes down to the fact that it's built on top of the Retool platform and your existing data and resources. You can use the governance features of Retool to maintain control of your data and keep everything secure, but this is a huge increase in the speed at which you can build. With these new capabilities, I was able to build an app that probably would have taken 2-3 hours in just 22 minutes!
