I know, this is meta…

Product Hunt has changed quite a bit since it started as an email digest just over two years ago. Today, we’re introducing another big update — a more personalized and simplified

If you login, you’ll see a personalized feed, highlighting things upvoted and posted by those you follow. Your Product Hunt will look different than mine.

We’re also moving away from the horizontal scroll. We tried it, but it’s become clear that most of you prefer the simple vertical feed.

Thanks to everyone that provided feedback on the new Product Hunt during the beta period (and for keeping it on the DL 🙊). I wrote more about the update on Medium if interested. Eager to hear everyone’s ideas!

@rrhoover I love that you guys have the courage to try new things, and know when they are not working. Keep up the great work. 😻

@rrhoover 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Frederik Trovatten — Marketing & Growth
@rrhoover I love the idea about a personalized feed and simple vertical feed.
I'm still not completely sold on the way you display product-pages - I'm talking about the low-opacity backgrund that follows every product-page. Maybe it's just my personal preference... That said, PH remains one of my favorite sites and your Chrome Extension is super handy!

Keep it up!
Joe Sturgess — Marketing Exec, SwiftSocial
@rrhoover Love the new design already, was never sure about the carousel homepage... I hope this sticks! DId you find the carousel have a negative effect on your usage metrics at all?
Danny Postma — Founder of
@rrhoover Wicked! 👏🏻
Simon Schmid — International @iubenda & more.
@rrhoover my favorite version yet. Except for media attachments, they don't seem as intuitive to me. The get it button being the only link takes some getting used to as well, but let's see how it goes.
Brian Krall — Lead Front-end Developer, Tovala
@rrhoover Loving 3.0.
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@sturge87 we actually saw a lot of people navigating to /tech, /games, etc. to view the vertical feed on individual category pages. The horizontal navigation was less usable and ultimately not scaleable for where we're going.
Elia Morling —
@rrhoover congrats! What are the plans for the IOS app? Thanks
Adam Marx — CEO, Glipple, Inc.
@rrhoover Love the 3.0 update. One thing I will say though is that I think PH should guard against the feed becoming "too personalized." I quite like the idea of first seeing products which have been upvoted by those I follow, but I also don't want to miss out on anything which I might find interesting that others may not. A large part of discovery is serendipity, and "tripping over" things you never thought about liking, but end up loving. I think the personalized feed is a good place to start in this, but I also believe that there should be a little flexibility in this respect; a little bit of "measured chaos" if you will. Just a thought. Great job to the whole PH team. :)
Emilio Ramirez Eguia — Co-Founder & Ops, Somos Academy
@trovatten I agree with your point on the product pages. There's something about them I feel could be better.
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@tribaling we just released an update to the iOS app, now with iPad support. We met yesterday to discuss roadmap. We're also planning to simplify the app.
Joe Sturgess — Marketing Exec, SwiftSocial
@rrhoover Yeah that's what I tended to do a lot. Great work!
jack rometty — student
@rrhoover hunting PH3.0 a really great explainer for people who don't know about the update before coming to ph. It quells any confusion caused by the new layout by letting users know there was a huge update. :)
Rob Kenedi — EiR @ TWG, host #smallrooms podcast
@rrhoover It's more meta to see the PH bar at the top of PH ;) I'm surprised there isn't a "Hello product hunters!" part of the page :P
Marco Peluso — Founder and CEO, Qardio, Inc.
I love it
Louis Galipeau — Product Manager / DJ

I miss being able to see who upvoted anyone else's comments.
Seb Kreutzberger — SwiftyBeaver, Founder & CEO
@rrhoover Thank you for replacing the horizontal scrolling with vertical scrolling!
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@muloka we updated the post pages and haven't taken the time to add it back in. I'm with you.
Rob Williger — CMO MapFig, Copywriting for Non-Mktrs
@rrhoover Great job by you and the team. I was one who would click over as I preferred the vertical scroll. I also like how now I see top things in different categories right from the home page. I noticed that there is no longer a visible link to any of the upcoming pages? Is that a change or just something that hasn't been implemented yet?
@robertwilliger It's now called "newer" and it's right on the front page. Easy to miss, actually.
Alexis Ohanian — Co-founder, Reddit & Initialized Capital
@rrhoover Keep up the awesome, Ryan.
Rob Williger — CMO MapFig, Copywriting for Non-Mktrs
@pori_alex Thanks for the clarification. I just assumed those were more recently posted as in chronological instead of popularity.
Yay for iPad app! Was the first thing I noticed when I checked PH today.
adam — Mobile Product Manager, Capital One
@rrhoover Not sure that I like the personalized feed. I enjoy seeing what others (not necessarily my friends) find interesting. Maybe there's an opportunity to do both here? :-)
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@sftechiescum we're not making the feed 100% personalized and like you, I too want to see what "the world" finds interesting. We believe the best experience is a combination of both these things.
@rrhoover Greatest update ever! :-) Vertical feed feels so much easier to read through.
Justin McGill — Founder of LeadFuze
@adammarx13 @rrhoover Complete agree with Adam here. I don't necessarily want to see what people I follow recommend. The beauty of PH is discovering new products, not necessarily products that those in my network are using.
Robert Solomon — CEO, Wisdom Business Advisors
@rrhoover Feels better already!
Jack Smith — Serial Entrepreneur & Startup Adviser
@muloka yeah, I thought that it was a bug that I couldn't see who'd upvoted any more
Justin Krup — Founder, BOKUGA
@rrhoover @sturge87 Awesome! I was actually just thinking yesterday about the annoyance of the horizontal scroll on PH (kept accidentally triggering gestures on my mac). Really glad to see this update!! Curious–if you're open to sharing – about what you're using for the recommendation engine.
Deron Sizemore — Owner - and
@rrhoover Love the new homepage going back to a vertical list. Just wish it happened a month or so ago as I think my app might have gotten more eyeballs on it as I was always juuuuuust outside the view of the horizontal slider! Oh well... there's always my next app. :) All the best going forward.
@rrhoover Great new version, perhaps you could consider A) option to disable the GIF preview animation (hold on the first or last frame) B) Enlarge the upvote counter (the feature that made Product hunt what is today)
Kevin Nguy — Doorman
@rrhoover You guys did a great job! 💪
Guled Ahmed — Innovator, Aspiring Entrepreneur
@rrhoover The new design is absolutely stunning. Nice work.
Sam Doshi — Co Founder @
@rrhoover New changes work more efficiently on chrome which is a god send
Daniel Lee — Product Manager
@rrhoover PH inception going on right now!
Stephen Olmstead — VP of Partnerships @ InVision
@rrhoover Awesome job Ryan + Team keep it up!
subhanjan — Founder,
@rrhoover Hey Ryan,
Agree with Adam Marx. While I love the personalized feed, it also puts us in a bubble. So if anything lets have two vertical feeds. One from people I follow and the other the general / overall leader board.
Conner Fritz — Developer Developer Developer Developer
@rrhoover Like the layout, but looks like opening products in New Tabs is no longer possible? 😞
Hrishi Mittal — Founder,
@rrhoover Ahhhhhhhh this is 1000x better. My brain could not handle that horizontal scroll and info overload. Thank you!
Austen Allred — co-founder, Grasswire
@connerfritz @rrhoover THIS. Not being able to open in new tabs completely destroys the experience for me.
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@austenallred @connerfritz that's a bug. You can CTRL+click to open new tabs but the right click > open new tab is broken. Will fix!
Conner Fritz — Developer Developer Developer Developer
@rrhoover good to know, thanks! Any plans for middle button/scroll click new tab too? 🙏🏻
Shama Butala — Founder and CEO @The TestNerds Team
@rrhoover That's awesome! Personalization is key...and simplification is a corollary of standardization!
Pym — Founder, Phydji
@rrhoover "We’re also moving away from the horizontal scroll." Thank you for that!
Paul Cotton — Creative Lead, One Education
@rrhoover @austenallred @connerfritz The right click thing is what I came here for <3
Otherwise, looking sweet. Reminds me a little bit of Feedly.
Sourav Ray — Building TableHero http:/
@rrhoove in that case submissions to categories other than Tech, which generally get only a fraction of the total audience won't appear on the default landing page. Have you consider a new ranking algorithm for the home page listing?
Danny Fiorentini — Founder of @MuzeekHQ
@rrhoover ahhhhh much better. :)
Aram Shahinyan — Art Director at ZOOM GRAPHICS
@rrhoover thanks for the update, Ryan. It does look much better now, but there are still some bugs, which haven't gone anywhere, and keep on spoiling the user experience :(
I mentioned them a few months ago, here are the details:
Jared B. — Marketing
@rrhoover I love the vertical feed!
Abhijith — Co-Founder, Tenory
@rrhoover This is amazing! Its great to have everything available at a glance. The way you've achieved with still providing lot of white space and breathing room is awesome.
Mohsen M Khali — IoT investor @ Iratel Ventures
@rrhoover I love this new design.
Pulkit Agrawal — Building Better Onboarding @trychameleon
@rrhoover nice work to you and the team! cc @eriktorenberg @LukasFittl. Do you guys bake in potential competition from sites like @siftery when planning product changes?
Dhruba Adhikari — Product Director, Picovico
@trovatten @rrhoover There is bug in @producthunt 's chrome extension and its too irritating.
Someone please fix that. httpss://.... (just a typo)
Ethan Sebban — I build stuff 🌊
@rrhoover Would love to have a clutter free version like this
Without that black carousel...
Ryan Hoover — Founder, Product Hunt
@ethansbbn good thoughts! Others have same the same thing. We're seeing good engagement with the banners and it gives us an opportunity to add more visual interest to the site, but we're still evaluating if we should keep it.
Louis Galipeau — Product Manager / DJ
@ethansbbn @rrhoover Maybe have a preference you can toggle in your account settings?
Josh Muccio —
@rrhoover You should turn those banners into popups 😂 Then you'd see engagement skyrocket!

jkjk I agree with @ethansbbn, perhaps you could create a smaller version of the banner that sits at the top of the sidebar and automatically scrolls every couple of seconds.
Ravi Vadrevu — Founder of Kriya AI, Founder of Meed
@rrhoover @ethansbbn - Banners could come in between the feed like sponsored items. Just a thought!
Jonathan Barnette — Owner, iCandy
@muloka @ethansbbn @rrhoover And if you are adding preferences, allow someone to default their page Category (ie. "Tech"), if they wish!!! It's still my first click each visit.
Cody — Owner of Redbearded
@ethansbbn @rrhoover I have modified my CSS to look like this when I visit. I miss the original version of Product hunt that was so simple...
