The Atlantic is reporting that this program found a star that either has an extremely rare natural phenomenon or... something built by an alien civilization. (As in, they actually formally talked about that being a possibility). They're proposing resources to look into this star further as soon as January. Added this to my Citizen Science collection! This project helps "normal people" help out astro-scientists looking for planets around other stars. You have to look for patterns in the dip from the star's light caused by a planet crossing "in front" of the star from our point of view. This ends up requiring human judgement and can't be done well with algorithms yet.

I love the idea of using people to train neural networks to discover patterns in data - I am not entirely sure if this company is using the output to train neural networks but that would be cool.

Crowdsourcing science data processing sounds like the best idea since wikipedia :)
