This is such an obvious omission from iMessage native functionality (they kinda cover it with shared lists in Notes, but it’s not quite the same) Well done.

Does the recipient need to have the app installed?

@mickc79 Yeah, but you can still share them lists even without it installed, then when they try and click on it, it will just direct them to the app store.
