Inversion Art is a Y Combinator-inspired accelerator for fine artists. Twice a year, we invest in 15+ artists by buying up to $100k of their work, putting them through a premium accelerator program, and then handling their studio operations for five years.
I remember Earbits! Love that you're exploring new models and supporting artists, @joey_flores.
Sounds like it's early but what's been the biggest learning so far?
@rrhoover Hey Ryan! Exciting that you remember Earbits.
Here are some of the biggest lessons learned:
1. Almost all artists need significant help, even the ones that are achieving solid success. We have artists earning over $1M a year from their practice who are very interested in participating in our program.
2. The equity in the art world is the art itself. We designed a model that takes advantage of the fact that these emerging works can 50X or 100X in value. It has allowed us to build a more traditional accelerator business model with venture scale returns.
3. Brand management in fine art is incredibly difficult and important. In the art world, context and reputation are everything, and this applies to how we present our brand and ourselves to the art world.
Hello Product Hunters,
Brace yourself for a startup unlike anything you've seen on Product Hunt.
I am an alumni of Y Combinator (Earbits, acq. 2015) and going through YC changed my life. My company Inversion Art is bringing that same powerful accelerator model to the $10B world of contemporary fine art.
Each year, our all-star team (inversionart.com/team-1) chooses two groups of high profile artists and invests in them by buying $15k-100k of their work for our private collection. We put them through a 3-month accelerator with an invite-only exhibition (Demo Day) for curators, collectors, gallery owners and other helpful partners. We also provide 5-years of outsourced studio administration (legal, accounting, tax filing, web management, PR, etc.) in exchange for 15% of their income, which ultimately covers our operations, returns our initial investment, and eliminates our reliance on outside capital in FY04.
Over the next decade, we will invest in over 1,000 artists, provide studio services to 500 more, and we'll use the income sharing revenue to build a 3,000 piece art collection with fully matured value of $305M to $500M. We'll build SaaS products to support our studio operation services, reinvest profits in doubling down on our top investments, and become a definitive cultural organization with the first early stage investing model for the world of fine art.
We have already signed four artists to our program which include a recipient of the 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship, an artist with works held by the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, and others.
Our investors include one of the top 200 art collectors globally, the board members of several contemporary art museums, as well as numerous highly successful Y Combinator alumni who want to help us change the lives of artists.
We are launching our first cohort in spring of 2023 and we hope to have support by people from all industries and walks of life!
-Joey
