Any nerd who's looked into color analysis has been frustrated by the complete lack of hard definitions for the color seasons. You figure out your own category, then you have absolutely no way to reliably identify whether or not a particular color will work for you. So, what do you do? Give up? Say that color seasons are purely subjective, and not based in any sort of science at all? Absolutely not. You train a neural network to do the categorizations for you. So, that's what we did. We took hundreds of examples of seasonal palettes, and used them as training data for a sequential neural network. Despite the not-so-rigorous nature of most of the example categorizations you find online, there is an obvious and stark visual difference between seasons in example palettes. This gave us quite a bit of confidence in our approach. In the end, we ended up with a model that categorizes clothing colors quite accurately. Ultimately, we wanted to turn this model into a simple and straightforward tool that would actually be useful to people. In essence, we build something that we ourselves wanted to use, and we hope you like it.

This sounds intriguing! How does the trained model handle edge cases where a color might fit into multiple seasons? I'm curious about the accuracy in those scenarios. Also, will there be a mobile app version for easier access?
James Young
@star_boat The current version is a mobile app! We're considering making the model available via an api (and maybe a react component) if people want to integrate it directly with online stores. In the case of contradictory information (which came up a lot actually), it will display a list of all guesses above a particular threshold of probability. I think it's 20% but I don't remember off the top of my head. The end result is that when it's not sure it'll say it could be several. Ultimately though, the best way to use it to analyze something is to take a handful of color samples from different areas of a single piece, then look at what comes up the most often. It's not uncommon for a piece to work with several related seasons.

If you're into color analysis, this tool is a must-try! Super accurate with seasons and colors, and easy to use. Definitely something that was needed. Congrats on this awesome launch!
James Young
@alexandermoore Thank you! We're super proud of the accuracy! As you categorize more colors it'll show you a summary of everything sorted by season on the wardrobe tab. It makes it super satisfying to see your palettes emerge over time.

@alexandermoore Thanks so much for trying it out!! We really appreciate it.

This sounds like a neat idea! Haven't dived in fully yet, but love the concept of using AI for color seasons. Will definitely give it a try soon. Congrats!

@davidcarter Thank you! We felt like it was the only way to get a good user experience. The definitions of what palettes work with what season are just really vague, so training the AI to essentially average the consensus was the only good way to answer the "What color season is this shirt/dress/etc?" question.
