How to American: An Immigrant's Guide to Disapointing Your Parents is a book by Silicon Valley actor Jimmy O. Yang about growing up as a Chinese immigrant in California and making it in Hollywood.
"I turned down a job in finance to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. My dad thought I was crazy. But I figured it was better to disappoint my parents for a few years than to disappoint myself for the rest of my life. I had to disappoint them in order to pursue what I loved. That was the only way to have my Chinese turnip cake and eat an American apple pie too."
Just ordered a copy for myself. Can't wait to read @FunnyAsianDude!

Can't wait to read this @funnyasiandude as someone who is constantly disappointing her immigrant parents choosing a career in tech over law/medicine, I feel like I'm going to get a lot out of this book β€οΈ
Are the learnings in this book applicable to disappointing non-immigrants as well, @funnyasiandude?

I love that the Erlich toy is knocked over in the second photo. It's all about the details.

Ran thru the Audible version real quick. Great book, fantastically read by Jimmy. Highly recommended, whether you've seen silicon valley or not. If you've ever had a dream, read it. If you've ever lived in a country as a foreigner, read it. If you've ever met someone who moved to the US from somewhere else, read it. Basically, everyone, read it.
