๐คฏ A 4gb RAM Postgres on Heroku is $200 per month. If you self-host it on AWS with the exact same firepower, it'll be just $30 per month - almost 7 times cheaper!
๐กOf course with managed databases you don't need to worry about configuration, backups, monitoring. So you spend less time and that's worth it. But what if you could have the same without paying a premium?
๐ฅ Hippobase does just that - it automatically configures leading open source databases like Postgres or Mongo in your AWS account. So you have all the convenience without the cost.

@igorzij How does this work? Do you spin up the required EC2 instance and install the database on that? So this is an alternative to using RDS?
Yes, exactly that. Plus wire the instrumentation around it. Almost 2 times cheaper than RDS - and for things like dev environments you don't really need the extra decimal digits of reliability, it's more about ease of setup

Absolutely love this @igorzij - will look into this for hosting my db on my next side project. Fantastic concept, beautifully presented. Thanks!
