Free, open-source macOS menu bar app that displays your Claude AI usage percentage. Get notifications before hitting your limit. Lightweight, private, and native.
Hey builders 👋
Like many of you, I've been using Claude daily and kept running into the same fear: when will my limit be reached? How much have I consumed in this session?
I ended up going back and forth to Settings > Usage to check... literally every 5 minutes 😅
So I built ClaudeUsageBar: a minimal menu bar app that shows your Claude usage percentage at a glance.
What it does:
➡️ Shows your current session (5-hour) and weekly usage directly in the menu bar
➡️ Notifies you at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90% thresholds so you can pace yourself
➡️ Displays exactly when your limits reset
➡️ Works with both Free and Pro plans
➡️ Global shortcut (Cmd+U) to check your usage from anywhere
Privacy focused:
➡️ No data collection, no analytics, no telemetry
➡️ Your session cookie stays on your machine
➡️ Fully open source – inspect every line of code
Lightweight:
➡️ Under 5MB
➡️ Native for Apple Silicon and Intel
➡️ Minimal CPU/memory footprint
It's completely free and open source, feel free to try it out!
Would love to hear your feedback or feature suggestions 🙏
@artzainnn This scratches a very real anxiety itch 😄 Once people stop worrying about the limit, what behavior actually changes, do they plan prompts differently, batch work, or just feel calmer and push harder until the bar turns red?

this is exactly the kind of tool i didn't know i needed until now. constantly checking settings > usage like a maniac. will this support multi-model? same anxiety exists for every AI tool with limits lol

Really handy. I can finally close that browser tab. Thank you

There's nothing worse than hitting the limit right in the middle of a complex problem-solving session :D
How often does the bar sync with the actual usage data? is it real-time after every message? Also, does it accurately track the usage for the Max plan?
