Hello Product Hunt! This is Peter, founder at BodyBarista 👋 We are very excited to share the latest version of BodyBarista on iOS with you. At BodyBarista, it is our mission to enable every fitness enthusiast to measure his or her progress on their body in the easiest and most accurate way. BodyBarista can measure your body in inches or cm as well as your Body Fat % based on 2 pictures you take with your iPhone in front of a mirror. We believe that in the future everyone should be empowered to have access to their body metrics and the personal tools for that. Here are some things you can do with BodyBarista: 📏 Check your Total inches or cm on the Home page 🏃‍♂️ Switch to Body Fat % in Settings to see your body fat % 🏋️‍♂️ Check your individual body part measurements in the Results page 🏃‍♀️ View the progress your body has made visually on the Heat map 🏆 Compare any 2 pictures of yourself in the app by going to the Results page and clicking Photos> under the measurements graph 🆒 Sign up for a monthly report of your progress in Settings 💪 Compare your measurements to the average man/woman by looking at the measurements graph We would be super happy to see you trying out BodyBarista. Let us know what you think, share your feedback, ideas - we’ll be here to answer questions all day! 💪☕

@peter_falk Interested to know how this works? 🤔
Peter Falk
@aaronoleary Hi Aaron, we use our patent method to calibrate the mirror selfies so that we have the image in true size (regardless of distance and angle) then we're running it through a neural network to extract the dimensions and from that the Body Fat %
Aaron O'Leary
@peter_falk That sounds really interesting! It's so cool to see the advancement of imaging technologies through things like ML and Neural learning! So many possibilities in this field!
Peter Falk
@aaronoleary Glad you like it 😄 Yes it's a really interesting time right now where body digitalization/measurements finally can happen 💪

@kieranchase Skinfold measurements and body dimension measurements have the same accuracy (which is the second best compared to DEXA). It's true that wee are doing some statistical regression before using current anthropometrical formulas (that's why we state it as beta in the app). But eventually the whole body fat estimation will be done on image level directly. With ML on our calibrated images, we are going to be the closest consumer product to the DEXA scanner. I don't believe, even at this beta stage of the BF%, that we are as inaccurate as the BIA that shoots current through your legs and trying to predict the body composition, when the gut content varies over the day and the lengths of limbs are different form person to person.

I like the idea! Any plans on launching the Android edition ?
Peter Falk
@footer Hi Amin, yes eventually. Image recognition and extraction can actually be easier on Android. But when that is said, we would need to make a catalog of all phone sizes (which is easier with iPhones) and our development is completely native (as we need to have full controll of the camera, etc..), so it will take time..

It’s quite cool that you acctually can track and measure the body as part of the morning routine or after the gym session. I like the new versions focus on BF% or Total Inches, that makes it frel like that bathroom scale experience but with the mirror instead.

After taking the automatic pics there is a validation to pin the points to the body. It‘s good to acctually see where the measurements are taken and I understand that it’s also needs to pin the location exactly. I hope that this step gets more automatic eith time..

But overall a great app solving body measurements much better that anything I’ Seen before.

Pros:

Use the camera to get measuremnets

Cons:

The annotation process

Cool idea!

@vladyslavvashchinskyi Thanks Vlad 🙏😺

Have you done any studies to compare how accurate this method is to an actual water test?
Peter Falk
@bwb Hi Ben, @kieranchase asked the same question (DEXA is a little bit more fancy thing now compare to Hydrostatic test) Skinfold measurements and body dimension measurements have the same accuracy and is by many researchers their preferred method (much easier to conduct while the accuracy penalty isn't that bad). It's true that wee are doing some statistical regression before using current anthropometrical formulas (that's why we state it as beta in the app). But eventually the whole body fat estimation will be done on image level directly. With ML on our calibrated images, we are going to be the closest consumer product to the DEXA scanner / Hydrostatic test. About the tests we have done: - Calibration of the images for dimension measurements have been tested on 75 images with human size calibration object - The statistical formulas for BF% are using 7000 test users. We are correcting bugs and recalculate data from time to time. For the last two month we haven't found many errors but please let me know if you find something that looks strange 💪

@kieranchase @peter_falk Sorry not seeing much of an answer :), when you take 20 people and you do your app and a traditional test, what is the difference you are seeing on range of accuracy :)? Just trying to understand how accurate this is.
Peter Falk
@bwb The accuracy of BodyBaristas BF% beta feature is +/- 4.5% (both men and women) compare to skinfold measurements with +/- 3.5% (m) and +/- 3.7% (f).
Ben Fox
@peter_falk Awesome thanks!
Yana Polulyakh
It was a great pleasure for us to work on BodyBarista. Proud to contribute to something really groundbreaking and be part of the healthy crowd 😉 Good luck on behalf of the whole Yalantis team, guys!

Congrats @edithdomschy @peter_falk @yana_polulyah. Would like to try out the android version. Will it be available very soon?
Peter Falk
@faradjine_a Hi Faradjine, yes eventually. Image recognition and extraction can actually be easier on Android. But when that is said, we would need to make a catalog of all phone sizes (which is easier with iPhones) and our development is completely native (as we need to have full controll of the camera, etc..), so it will take time..
