Hi Everyone! I built TOSTask because I was tired of falling prey to malicious corporate jargon, legalese that I didnt even know existed, and constituents that frankly, no one has ever heard of! Now, companies purposefully create hard-to-read and long TOS documents with the idea that they can hide things in the fine print. I've fallen prey to this too many times, and I know you have as well! So why should we care about privacy and what we sign up for? There are many examples of events where faulty terms-of-services and revokation of liability of corporate bodies has caused massive financial, personal, and political ruin, For example, in 2017, during the Equifax Breach, Hackers accessed the sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers and birthdays of nearly 147 million people, creating a long-term risk of identity theft and fraud. Victims trying to secure their data were initially forced to agree to terms that prohibited them from filing lawsuits against the company. If users knew the risk beforehand, they could've opted-out of data collection, and had their precious information kept safe. Even if you believe you have nothing to hide, your data is used for "social manipulation," such as the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where personal information from 50-90 million Facebook users was used to target voters with manipulative advertising, affecting democratic processes. What if I usually still sign up for something anyways? Knowing what a company will do with your information, and knowing Terms of Services, even if you still decide to sign up with them, puts you at a far greater leverage point than those who just scroll down and press 'Agree'. For example, many privacy policies state that data is shared with third parties for marketing. A user who reads this can actively look for and utilize provided "opt-out" mechanisms in the settings to stop their information from being sold, protecting themselves from unsolicited targeting.
