As the old saying goes, two things in life are certain: death and taxes. What’s also certain is the hair-pulling frustration when trying to make sense of specific tax laws. Did you know that every year, 150,000 words are added to the US tax code? Just when you think you got the hang of it, it’s back to square one.
That’s what happened with Ankur Nagpal. After selling his startup Teachable, Ankur quickly learned just how complex the US tax code is. Not to be dismayed, he set out to teach himself as much as possible, and during that learning, he discovered that within the code, there are many ways to save money — they just aren’t exactly easy to find.
Fast forward to today and that very frustration led to Ankur launching his next project, Carry. Carry is an all-in-one tax advantage platform that helps entrepreneurs optimize their net worth by discovering ways to save on their taxes.
Okay, how do I save? Carry helps you save by letting you easily set up several different tax-advantaged accounts like a Solo 401k, which is the company’s flagship account and, according to Ankur, one of the retirement accounts for self-employed people.
How big are the savings? Well, in response to a question from Product Hunt founder Ryan Hoover, Ankur mentions what’s called a defined benefit plan, which, according to Ankur, is the “grand daddy of retirement plan tax savings,” and when combined with a solo 401k can save nearly 300k. Of course, that’s different for everyone, depending on their own circumstances.
Outside of automating tax savings, Carry also exists to solve Ankur’s original problem in the first place, understanding tax codes. The team has invested time in financial education and hosts free workshops to help you wrap your head around money.
