What's great
Refbox is fantastic because it makes working with references so much easier and more organized. I love how I can pin images, GIFs, videos, and even notes on top of any window without switching tabs. The floating windows stay exactly where I need them, and the masonry gallery helps me quickly browse all my references in one place. It’s lightweight, fast, and perfect for creative workflows like drawing, designing, or planning ideas.
Features I like:
Floating windows that stay on top
Support for images, GIFs, videos, and links
Markdown notes
Clean, minimal interface
Masonry-style reference gallery
Quick drag-and-drop importing
What needs improvement
Adding cloud sync so references stay the same across devices
Better tagging or folders for large collections
Optional dark/light theme switching
Ability to resize multiple reference windows at once
vs Alternatives
I chose Refbox because it’s extremely simple, fast, and focused. It gives me floating reference windows without the extra clutter or learning curve. The drag-and-drop importing, support for images/GIFs/videos, and the clean gallery view make it feel effortless compared to other tools. It’s exactly what I needed for a smooth creative workflow.
How are references automatically organized and searchable?
Refbox organizes references in a clean masonry-style gallery, making everything easy to browse visually. It’s simple and intuitive, though adding more advanced tagging or a search bar in the future would help users manage very large collections.
Does it work well with drawing tablets and styluses?
Yes, it works smoothly with drawing tablets and styluses since Refbox simply floats on top of your main workspace. It doesn’t interfere with pen input, and the windows stay stable even when moving between apps like Photoshop, CSP, or Procreate (desktop). It feels natural to use beside a tablet.
Does Refbox sync across devices or offer cloud backup?
Right now, Refbox doesn’t offer cloud sync or multi-device backup, so everything stays local on your current device. It would be great to have an optional cloud sync feature in the future, especially for people who switch between a laptop and desktop.
