I realised that there was a need for this when I was building a markdown-powered blogging system a few months ago. There were other link-shortening services, but there was no simple and free one with a developer-friendly API. The other thing I required was short, memorable urls. That's why we chose to use 3-character alphanumeric ids that were all lowercase.
