Data-driven VC Landscape 2023
Great report and insights into the VC industry! Bravo! VCs have not really been early adopters of tech for their own use, in spite of supposedly being experts in spotting "the next big thing";) Maybe that's changing now with GenAI and easier tools that you have identified (and it's a lot of tools to evaluate, with more coming)? I've been a founder receiving VC money. And also an adviser to fellow entrepreneurs to help secure VC funding. Many investors have admitted to me that they rely a lot on what they hear from the founder when it comes do pre-diligence (e.g. market, competitors, "secret sauce" etc.) before deciding. The founders also build data-rooms that VCs must trust. I think LLMs will help here a lot - for both sides of the table! But I always found that the real key challenge for investors is to assess early stage ventures' (and founders') maturity. Meaning founders' ability to execute across all disciplines of growth (tech, product, sales etc). Not just looking at decks that is more of a "brochure" of what they hope to build. So how is this done and what's the role of AI here? My belief is that we will see a combo of GenAI, deterministic/boolean logic and human-in-the-loop for a while, when it comes to making the best investment decisions. It's an art that can be a lot more precise with data. And the same goes for the founders when it comes to picking their investors and executing their plan. Exciting times indeed! Keep up the great work mapping out these exciting data-driven VC trends! Best, Thorgs P.S: Disclosure: We have build a platform around these principles (pitchago.com) for both founders to self-assess their maturity and venture stage, and for investors to score each venture for best fit to their investment thesis.
