Good call. Having a positive mindset is important. Wonder if having something in place (i.e., a Likert type scale) that allows the person asking for feedback to decide how honest they would want their friends to be might be helpful? For example, if my friends know they have my permission to not sugar coat, it could help alleviate any feeling of guilt or uncertainty they might have.

How do you go about optimizing for (brutally) honest feedback from friends/coworkers? Seems like a particularly tough nut to crack. But interesting!
