I started making these cards because I wanted to see what playing cards look like when you strip everything away. No suits, no illustrations, no 600 years of tradition. Just the bare minimum information needed to define a card. The web app was meant to be a simple visual companion - scan a card, see its face. But then I realised you could create unusual cards with it - like the 39 of Hearts.

Pure Data Playing CardsA deck stripped to pure data
Playing cards have used the same visual language for 600 years - suits, pips, court illustrations. Pure Data strips all of that away. Every card in the deck is a structured JSON object: rank, suit, type. Nothing else.
A companion web app uses OCR to scan the cards and render the face visually.
The deck functions as both a physical object and a dataset.
Funded in 24 hours on Kickstarter. Currently at 400%.
