Building NekoYaku - AI manga translator

About

Solo maker. I read Japanese manga and got tired of translators that rebuild the whole page and hand it back broken — cut edges, bubbles translated halfway. So I built NekoYaku, which lays the translation over the page instead of remaking it. Mostly working on Chrome extensions right now. Happy to talk about anything to do with getting one through Web Store review — I've been through that a few times.

NekoYaku's long-term goal: translate once, read it with zero tokens

Speech bubbles are where other translators come apart: half translated, or clipped at the edge.

The models have caught up. Epoch AI found that the price of reaching a given level of AI capability fell between 9x and 900x per year, and responses now come back in seconds. That makes it practical to read the whole page first and translate every line with the full conversation in mind, so a translation can keep the feel of the manga.

You can also bring your own key (BYOK) if you'd rather pay your own provider. Requests go straight from your browser to OpenRouter, Google Gemini or OpenAI, and use zero NekoYaku credits.

My long-term goal is to spend no tokens at all. This doesn't exist yet. Once NekoYaku has a community, I'd like to build a place where someone who has already paid tokens for a finished translation can share the text, so the next reader can load or upload it and see it on the page right away. Translate once, read everywhere.

NekoYaku - Manga Translator - AI manga translation that leaves the artwork alone

Most manga translators rebuild the page to translate it: erase the text, repaint the background, print new text on top. That rebuild is where results break — cut edges, bubbles translated halfway, and a wait before you see the damage. NekoYaku never touches the page. It reads what is already on screen and lays the translation over it, in seconds. Close a card and the original art is right there. Three modes, 15 languages. Free to start: 30 credits, no card. Or use your own API key.
