Hi! I've been using ChatGPT with a custom prompt as my primary translator app since it came out. I live in Portugal - and am learning European Portuguese - and have found it to be a far better tool for actually _getting by_ in a foreign language than Google Translate or DeepL. The translation for an appointment can be either "compromisso" and a "consulta", for example, depending on the context....

The true story of Clifford Stoll's attempts (in 1986) to find out who had acquired root privileges to the university computer system he was looking after. Fascinating and charming in equal parts.

As with all of Neil Stephenson's books, the ending is... abrupt. But he makes up for it with a prescient technological backdrop. 3D printing, drones, nano tech and augmented humanity are all explored.
