I got into this community through a rabbit hole that started with something dumb: I had 50,000 unread emails and got curious about what that was actually costing, energy-wise. Ended up down a research hole on data center emissions, cloud AI vs. on-device inference, and how much of what we call "paperless" quietly isn't as clean as it looks.
That's led me toward caring a lot about on-device processing generally not just for privacy, but because the energy difference between cloud and on-device AI inference is bigger than most people realize (some of the research puts it at 75-95% less power for on-device).
I'm curious how others here think about this trade-off. For those of you building AI features are you defaulting to cloud APIs for convenience, or have you looked seriously at on-device models? And separately, does the "green tech" angle actually move the needle with users in your experience, or is it a nice-to-have nobody really chooses on?
