WhatsApp is apparently working on a version that enables this functionality for iOS users. A beta version can be downloaded (see http://www.whatsappforall.com/whatsapp-web-for-iphone-is-now-available-in-beta-version/), but you need to sign it using developer tools before you can install it.

@rrhoover - Apple has a Bluetooth profile available for devices to subscribe to incoming notifications, which is what Pebble uses for example. There's really not a lot of code required on the iOS side.
