I'm a software developer in Melbourne. I co-founded Podchaser, the podcast database, as CTO and helped take it through to its acquisition by Acast in 2022. Now I'm building the kind of apps I want my own family to use, starting with Quiddo, a pocket money app we run with our four kids. How do you handle pocket money at your place?

We launch Quiddo here on Wednesday, and before then I'd like to hear how other families handle something we've argued about at our place for years.

My wife and I have four kids. Our rule is that everyday jobs, like emptying the dishwasher or feeding the cats, aren't paid, but if they don't get done, pocket money waits until we decide whether to release it. Bigger jobs, like washing the car, earn extra on top.

Some parents think tying pocket money to chores teaches kids they only help the family when they're paid. Others think pocket money should be earned, full stop. Plenty of families skip pocket money altogether.
