I've been a maker since my teenage years in the 1990s. During that time, I created a simple Windows media player and distributed it as "shareware," asking for a one-time fee of $10. To my excitement, I received an envelope all the way from the US to Sweden some time later, containing a slightly rumpled $10 bill. It was one of the best days of my life. Word about my project got around at school, and I found myself confronted by a bully in the hallway. "Why would anyone in their right mind give you money for that piece of garbage you created?", he asked me. Happily, this encounter happened the day after I received that envelope, and I took great pleasure in responding, "Well, actually..."
