I decide what's featured on the leaderboard - AMA w/ Gabe from Product Hunt

Hi everyone, Gabe here! I lead curating Product Hunt's leaderboard.

First thing I will say is that if I could feature every single product that works, I would. I love supporting makers and demoing products. I actually try to test every single thing that gets hunted every day... which is A TON.  But I view our job as to surface the most interesting, novel, useful, and innovative products - daily. Now we may not always get it right, the process isn't perfect, but we're trying to do right by the community.

Are you seeing a dip in the #buildinpublic movement?

I was talking with some people the other day about my build-in-public journey and they mentioned that they've noticed a drop in people doing the build-in-public thing with their startups. They specifically were talking about podcasting, so maybe it's only happening there? Or not at all - maybe just an algorithm thing? I personally haven't noticed a drop in interest, but I'm curious what others are noticing.

I think $1K MRR is a critical milestone, do you?

Your first dollar is the most important moment in your startup s journey. Assuming it s not your Mom ( ), it means someone bought into the promise of your product enough to lay down money for it. That s further than most products get. You now have permission to dive deeper. The next most important milestone is $10k MRR. Assuming you have expenses in check, this is ramen-profitable for most people and it unlocks huge potential because now time is your side. The constant daily urgency can be traded out for more controlled, longer-term thinking. This is where momentum-building really gets going and you can start methodically finding levers of growth to invest in. #3 on the list is $1,000 in MRR.

What's a rough estimate of signup traffic to expect for a free product?

I've launched on PH several times but it's been a while. My product is freemium, but I'm going to give away free lifetime licenses on launch day in the hopes it will spur more feedback from the community and learnings for me. And here's the thing... I'm bootstrapping the hell out of this. While I'm in this market validation phase I'm running the whole thing off of Replit and Airtable. I've got some pretty sick throttling and caching in place, but Airtable's API has a 5 requests/sec limit. So I'm trying to do some math and see how likely my throttler will be working overtime (and thus making my app seem slow). How many signups have you guys seen lately for decent-perfoming launches? Thanks!
