HomeDock OS was born on a Raspberry Pi 3 as a personal project by its initial developers, SurceBeats and Anghios. What started as a simple idea quickly gained local recognition, winning awards and eventually landing a spot in the startup accelerator at Miguel Hernández University in Elche. Without Raspberry Pi, we simply wouldn’t be here today.
We needed a fast, reliable way to manage isolated environments for apps on HomeDock OS. Docker’s lightweight containers and powerful CLI made it the perfect fit for creating seamless, scalable app management, exactly what HomeDock OS stands for.
While wrapping up the Rust + Tauri 2.0 version, we hit a roadblock: dynamically opening new WebViewsWindows from target="_blank" links was almost impossible. Combined with the need for seamless cross-platform support on Windows (with WSL2) and macOS (with Colima), Electron became the clear path forward, flexible, powerful, and ready for the universal self-hosting challenge.
