Cool, reminds me of the "Easy" button. Seems like it doesn't have anything to do with a Radar so potentially legal in every state per the site. I like the minimalistic design, nicely done.
@bryce_north - Congrats on the launch. How does the connectivity on this work? Does it have to be connected via your cellphone to get the Wifi connectivity (setup via BT)?
Though this description "TrapTap is completely legal (not a radar detector) and acts like your personal co-pilot, constantly warning you of danger." - Danger? If you are speeding, you are the real danger in this case =)
@sarthakgrover Hey thanks for the feedback and comments! Yes, TrapTap connects to the app via Bluetooth and gets its data from the app. Just to comment about data usage, our system actually uses less data and phone power than other GPS app types like Waze.
I agree and hopefully our speeding reminders can help with this. More so on that, for us, we see school zones as danger zones as the last thing anyone wants to do it accidently hit a kid who jumps out.
We wanted to offer all Product Hunt members an exclusive offer on our Kickstarter. We wanted to give our sold out Crazy Bird Special tier to everyone here. Just pledge $100 CAD or $77 USD (includes shipping) to the 5 dollar tier level.

@bryce_north I don't see any 100 cad deals listed? And the 89 cad one is all gone...
@robedarling Sorry I should have made this more clear. Pledge $100 CAD or $77 USD (which includes the shipping) to the $5 tier. Thanks!

@bryce_north Just saw this after I pledge the 109 CAD dollar tire level. Have changed pledge to 100 CAD to the 5 dollar tier level. Hope it works. Thank for the amazing product
Great idea. one question: how is it updated and how frequently, according to map changes? Could it display in a middle screen basic GPS directions (if you couple it with your GPS phone) to keep your phone away from you while driving? Cheers :)
@recastai Great question. Our team scraps this data while also working with third party company's who provides same data to large GPS products. This is adamantly updated, and done live through the app. This is an interesting idea and could be something for a future product. GPS directions isn't a huge focus at the moment, but we have been tossing around the idea of warning of traffic congestion through third party data apps such as Waze (still looking into it).
Hello Product Hunt, and thank you @afkehaya for hunting TrapTap - A wireless speed trap indicator.
I'm one of the makers of TrapTap here. Please send your questions if you have any.
TrapTap was created to be the simplest way to remind everyone to slow down, while also helping avoid getting caught in a speed trap. There have been many apps that offer a similar experience, but along with texting and driving laws these days, they offer a dangerous driving experience. With TrapTap, we wanted to bring a solution that was not only more safe than an app, but also more legal than a radar detector (most cities). In North America, the average person spends over $300 each year on speeding tickets.
TrapTap has pre-mapped all red light camera/speed traps and school zones in over 60 countries. For those hidden speed traps, mobile camera cars, and cop radar traps, it uses its community of users to help mark the location of these traps. Simply tapping on TrapTap will mark the location of each speed trap.
Please let me know what you think. I look forward to connecting with each of you and hearing your feedback.

@bryce_north "In North America, the average person spends over $300 each year on speeding tickets. " — Hi, very interesting! Can't wait to try it.
Also, I was wondering where did you get this from? Can you please reveal your source?
@bryce_north Great! Thanks for the info. Good luck guys!

This is a great product!
This should be a compulsory mandatory purchase for repeat offenders..
Also this is a great tool for people who are "new in town" as either new residents or visitors as they are not aware of said restricted zones.. Consider marketing to this group if your interests and circumstances permit.
I hope this was beneficial for you to read..
Thanks,

@jay_bee12345 Thanks for the comment JB - we agree. The ability to simply move it around and the simplicity of auto connecting means you can use it wherever you go.

I am actually disappointed to see people upvote a product that encourages drivers to hack around the system of controlling speeding on roads. I do like the features of reporting traffic incidents, traffic status and accidents etc , but totally disapprove of the marking & warning of hidden speed traps. Hidden speed traps are there for a purpose - to deter people who typically over speed and are potential threat to someone's life. My conscious does not allow me to encourage a product that hacks around a system which is meant to protect lives of innocent people. Speeding tickets are good for the society and humanity - it is one small step to save lives of innocent people on roads.
Have the tech loving people in Product Hunt become so much in-humane to ignore the fact that this product actually encourages reckless driving which actually increases the chances of someone innocent getting killed !!! One needs to know the the balance between love for tech and humanity to understand the impact of a tech product on humanity. I wish Product Hunt had a down vote button which I'd like to press right now!
Its a paradox that, the Kickstarter video of this product talks of "saving life' several times. Seriously!! Are you kidding me. How would it save the life if it is mean to warn you of potential speed trap and allow you to over-speed otherwise! The video ends with "....so lets be real,...you got to be safe and lower the amount of money you spend on speeding tickets, so you can continue to do things that you love" -- which in my mind reads like "lower the amount of money you spend on speeding tickets , so you can continue to over-speed while driving and accidentally kill innocent people".
I hope the maker of his product listens to his conscious and takes a ethical call to remove this specific feature from the product!. I would also like to ask this question to the maker of this product. Would you be able to sleep in the night, knowing that one of your customer actually got into a accident due to reckless driving and killed an innocent life. And the fact that he paid you money to allow him to drive recklessly and get away with it!. Think about it.!
@srikanth_peddibhotla For starters, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write this detailed note on how you feel about TrapTap. I can tell this is quite personal for you, so maybe I can share a bit of our thoughts of why we started TrapTap and show you how we actually take the stance of trying to create a safer driving experience (we are on your side). I would like to note that our team has worked very hard in creating TrapTap and will agree we will not be able to please everyone. This is a sensitive subject for many.
I would like to rephrase what you wrote into something more condensed and approachable: Can you justify why TrapTap claims to be safe and possibly save lives?
Great question!
First I would like to say that TrapTap reminds people to slow down. The more reminders we can push out, the more we can hope people will remember not to speed in the first place. We don't condone speeding, but people do it regardless of having insight to where speed traps are. We warn people well in advance of a trap, so if you think about this, that is that much less time not speeding, and not creating a dangerous situation (don't get us started on the amount of fatalities from people hitting cops on the side of the road who have pulled others over for speeding).
You have to remember that we didn't invent the idea of others informing others of where these speed traps are. People have, and still do, flash their headlights to warn others of police, have devices for detection (radar detectors), and even use apps like Waze, which all do the same thing. But what do all these have in common? They are either illegal or very unsafe. These apps take 5-12 seconds to log an incident and are unsafe. "Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. When traveling at 55 mph, that’s enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded." (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute).
TrapTap is not trying to be the solution to "avoiding cops" but the solution to a safer alternative to what is already being used out there. We want safer roads too, and the idea that current products which offer these features are unsafe or illegal. People are using them and we cannot stop them. So why not offer a solution that hopefully might migrate people over to a way of doing something, that is more safe than current alternatives and legal to do so.
I would like to also note how marking and warning of speed traps, hidden and stationary, does help lower people's speed and does make the roads safer. There are many claims to this, and they are easily searchable, but one I would like to point out is from Sergeant Kerry Schmidt of the highway safety division of the Ontario Provincial Police: “Our position is that the more people who know that the cops are out, the better.” You can find the source to that article here (which talks about TrapTap locating cops): http://www.autofocus.ca/news-eve...
I would also like to bring up school zones and how important these are. We are also working on ways to warn for playgrounds. Again, the idea is not to allow people to speed in these areas, but instead, warn them when they are near these and take EXTRA precaution in order to not accidentally hit a child. Even if this is someone marking a police car tagging vehicles in a school zone area. So when you ask if I can sleep at night, the answer is yes. I would rather have someone slowing down an extra 5-10 seconds before entering a zone, especially if it is one involving children.
When we get constant reminders to do an action, usually that action becomes innate. We can only hope that others will continue to not speed. Not speeding means less dangerous on the road, less fatalities, and as we all know, less money we spend doing something we shouldn't.

@bryce_north Thank you for the detailed response. Unfortunately, I am not convinced that speed trap detectors will have a positive impact on the people who over speed.
I do appreciate your concern and efforts to make driving around school areas safer by having school area warning feature in your product which in my opinion is a better & efficient way to control speeding and encourage safe driving instead of speed trap detection. I really liked this part of the product (signalling near schools & playgrounds).!
If you really want to make driving safe, it is sufficient that the product just signals whenever the driver drives over the speed limit of the road. This is a standard feature available in map apps (like Here etc), and your device has an advantage of notifying this to the driver without distraction.
"When we get constant reminders to do an action, usually that action becomes innate" - in my opinion the action here is "slow down when the device beeps, not otherwise". And I don't need to explain why this innate action becomes dangerous on roads.
"You have to remember that we didn't invent the idea of others informing others of where these speed traps are" - I am not saying that the other products that have this feature are ethical either. They are not. They may be legal - but not ethical. A poison is a poison - there is nothing like a harmless poison.
"TrapTap is not trying to be the solution to "avoiding cops" but the solution to a safer alternative to what is already being used out there" - Again this is like saying, someone developed a knife that could kill without inflicting pain.
This brings us to an interesting debate topic around such products - so here's my video opening up the debate http://www.pnyxter.com/view/topi...
"You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing there will be no result. - Mahatma Gandhi " - very true , and hence my first post.
@scottradamson Hey @scottradamson great question. We've mapped the red light cameras and school zones for over 60 countries and the variable spots are crowdsourced.
