This is a really big deal. Remember the release of iOS? Remember the release of the Facebook API? This is amazing. InboxSDK actually makes it possible to write easily write apps that work great natively with Gmail, one of the largest untapped greenfield platforms in the world. Over 1 billion active users — it's how business is done. It's how people communicate.
The Streak team has basically made available the special sauce that made Streak CRM awesome. I can't wait to see what people build with it.
@garrytan This is awesome. We've been wanting to do a @goroost integration into gmail so people don't have to switch over to our dashboard to manage pushes and see basic analytics. Been too daunting and required too many resources to tackle on our own, with this it's back on our dev list!
@garrytan the release of the facebook api was in summer 2006. most people probably don't remember it - it was virtually unnoticed. (here's a TC article with coverage: http://techcrunch.com/2006/08/15...). the big deal was when apps started getting distribution through the API (in 2007).
this seems cool but i think the analogy might be exaggerated, since they don't appear to have an answer for distribution.
I'm a long time Streak user, the team behind InboxSDK and can't wait to see what devs do with the webmail experience.
Question: Will this be a consumer marketplace or more for enterprises to build apps for their own teams? @garrytan@aloo
@mckaythomas we think both types of apps can thrive. We have several internal apps here at streak that we use daily but the Dropbox for Gmail app that was built using the SDK has wide consumer appeal.
Longer term we hope to build an appstore inside of gmail for gmail apps. It owuld host both internal and public apps...

This looks awesome! I'm thinking of adding a Gmail sidebar for Donald and it seems like this would make it much easier/quicker to develop.
I'm weary of the continued state of this though. Is it open source? Do I eventually have to pay for it?
@timjahn Our plan is that you'll never have to pay for the SDK itself, and we plan on making it open source in the future. Streak makes good money (and growing) so we're in the nice position of taking a longer term view of things.
Streak has made my personal and professional life so much more efficient and productive. thanks @aloo! hope you make a PH collection of apps made with the SDK or help users determine which apps will conflict with each other.

Well, this is awesome. In about 5 minutes (after a quick read of the excellent docs) I was able to create an "Intro BCC Button" which I have wanted in Gmail for years and years. It moves the Intro-er from To -> BCC and the Intro-ee from CC -> To and automatically inserts "(XX to BCC)" in the body of the reply. I can't tell you how many times I've had to do this manually and how nice it is to have a button that just does it automatically. Here is a tweet with screenshots: https://twitter.com/jazzychad/st...
