I'm Imran, the creator of withoutBG Open Weights.

I started this project because I wanted an open background removal model that people could run on their own computer without giving up quality. Many open models still struggle with difficult cases like hair, fur, glass, smoke, veils, and other semi-transparent objects. I spent a lot of time improving those cases, and the current model performs better than most paid background removal services while staying fully open.

You can use it in different ways depending on your use case:

Docker for local inference, either as an HTTP service or a desktop app
Native macOS app
GIMP plugin for one-click background removal
Python package
ONNX weights if you want to integrate it into your own application

Everything runs locally, so your images don't have to leave your computer.

At some point this stopped being a side project and became a very expensive hobby. It took much longer than I expected, but I'm happy to finally share it.

I'd love to hear your feedback, especially if you have difficult images to test. Those edge cases help me improve the model.
