Why Did Windows Restart? is a Windows diagnostic utility that helps users understand unexpected restarts, shutdowns and BSODs. It analyzes Windows Event Log data, BugCheck information and nearby Critical/Error events, then presents the evidence in a clearer timeline. The free version includes local restart history, search/filtering and basic BSOD information. Pro adds EVTX import, diagnostic summaries, nearby event analysis and TXT/CSV export.
I built Why Did Windows Restart? after getting tired of manually piecing together Windows Event Log entries whenever a machine restarted unexpectedly.
The goal was to make restart and BSOD troubleshooting faster without pretending that correlation automatically proves causation.
The app focuses on presenting the available evidence clearly: restart/shutdown history, BugCheck information and nearby Critical/Error events.
I’d be especially interested in feedback from people who troubleshoot Windows systems regularly:
- Is the current diagnostic information useful?
- What would you want surfaced more clearly?
- Are there common restart/BSOD cases the app should handle better?
This is the first public Early Access release, so feedback is very welcome.
