Hi PH! I'm Karl. Video Squisher started when my mom's hard drive was full, but she didn't want to delete her old videos. She would have no idea how a video encoder worked, and I didn't want to teach her, nor did I want to tackle all those videos myself, manually compressing them.
I'm a techie guy, but most tools are super complicated and have all sorts of settings. Picking out just the right settings for each video or batch is way too tedious, I wanted something that just figured it out automatically. So I wrote my own. You pick how the result should look, in plain words. The app runs real test encodes (AV1 or HEVC, hardware or software), scores each one against your original with perceptual metrics (VMAF, SSIM, XPSNR), and only hands you the smallest encode that actually holds the quality line you chose. So you keep the quality you want without touching any encoding settings, Video Squisher does it automagically.
Some things I care about: it all runs on your machine, no uploads, no accounts, no subscription. The free tier is 5 videos a day, forever. Pro is $29 once, and use it forever!
It takes pretty much anything with a video stream: phone clips, GoPro and drone footage, even ProRes, DNxHD and MXF.
Mom got her space back. Happy to answer anything about the quality checking, the encoders, or why I skipped subscriptions. And if you squish something, I'd genuinely love to see your before/after sizes.
