Hey all! 👋
I’m Jordan, the designer and developer of UniChar. I’m excited to share with you the latest update that introduces a powerful new feature, Search by Drawing. It uses machine learning to predict what Unicode symbol you’re drawing, making it quick and easy to find the character you need even when you don’t know its name.
Search by Drawing is now available in beta with support for searching 152 pictograph symbols. By submitting your own drawings, you can help train the model to recognize all symbols. We need a lot of drawings to teach it - at least 50,000 (!) but even more would be fantastic. I’m very excited to open this up for anyone around the world to help improve the model. And it’s pretty fun to draw them - try to draw them all!
I’ve really wanted to create a beautiful, convenient, and accessible utility for working with Unicode symbols. The app includes a custom keyboard that allows you to type special symbols in any app, or you can use the widget to quickly copy your most recently used symbols. There’s even an Apple Watch and iMessage app. The apps and extensions are fully accessible with VoiceOver. Other powerful iOS features are supported including Drag and Drop with Split View on iPad, Spotlight integration, Handoff between devices, and more. But I’m thrilled to introduce Search by Drawing and I can’t wait for you to try it out.
I’d be happy to answer any questions you have! 😊
